The world moves forward on communication. People talk...a lot. The problem is the fact that everything isn't necessarily true. Things are sometimes twisted or exaggerated to make things sound presentable in there favor. On other occasions just lie completely where there is no truth behind it at all. The question is why lie? There must be a cause for the effect. The problem is what is the cause? In the document Why Are You Lying it gives four reasons why people may lie.
According to the document one reason for lying is FEAR. Fear is a is a reason to lie or a spark of motivation to make up a story in our favor. The fear may come from the awareness of knowing what may happen if the the truth comes out. Since we may not to fond of the consequence of what may happen we lie in a attempt to escape it. For example, take the picture of the man talking to his lawyer. The lawyer tells the man "I find in these cases that the best defense is a pack of lies". I think that the only way the client can get out of the situation is to lie. It's like how children lie so they won't get in trouble. They fear the consequence so they attempt to escape it through lying. I personally agree with this reasoning for lying. Only if it is your last hope of escape from the situation. The simple fact of the manner is why get in trouble if you don't have to. Especially if the lying is not really affecting the person your lying to. The thing is people need good lies. The type of lie where you have a reasoning for your reasoning and so on.
Another reason people lie is out of habit. Some people relied on lying so much they became adapted to the lifestyle. Some people are skilled at lying. It becomes a reflex to defend themselves. If there are no consequences the habit may break.
Some people lie just to lie. Like for example, I could say I have a million dollars stashed away in a bank. It's not really affecting anybody. They call it a white lie. Sometimes it be a promise made that won't be kept. The funny thing about it is that people tell these "white lies" but, as soon as it is told to them it is a problem. I used to tell "white lies" to get noticed and seem something I'm not. I really don't agree with type of lying. I feel it is ridiculous and unnecessarily.
Another reason people lie is because they over predict. Over prediction probably comes from pass experiences. Once a person feels they know someone well they can predict their reactions to certain situations. For example, a boy loses his phone. He feels his parents is going to punish him. So instead of telling his parents he loss his phone he tells them he left it at his friends house. So the parent said just get it tomorrow. So everyday he comes home he has to make up a excuse. Sooner or later he is going to have to find the phone, come up with another excuse which will cancel out the first one or just tell the truth. I think this type of lying is only helpful in certain situations. The only reason to lie in these situations is if you know you can make things better.
Another reason for people to lie is for their gain in life. People do this as a act of selfishness and greed. They call this lying for a deceptive gain. This can be compared to propaganda. People lie to make you think what they want you to think. This can be very harmful. If a person is very skilled at it they can easily have you convinced that the wrong is the right. For example, take the picture with the two men arguing and saying that each one is lying. They can be campaigning for some high position in politics. They can be digging up dirt on each other. They maybe lying to the people that are voting because, they want to win. So they lie and make the other person look bad. I don't agree with this type of lying because, I feel that innocent people should be lied to just so someone can have the upperhand in life.
